Classics To Keep, Trends To Try

Styles are forever shifting—they come and go, and some come and stay for good. Are you caught in a state of fashion confusion? Never fear—we’ve waded through waves of fashion information and sorted out what classics to keep and what trends to try. Check them out.

To keep:

The LBD (Little Black Dress). The ideal length for the LBD is mid-calf for medium-height gals and above-the-knee for petite girls. You can wrap a belt around it to give you the illusion of a figure if you’re of narrow built or don costume jewelry to lighten the dress’s starkness. Or, make like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and wear it with pearls for a classy, chic effect. The possibilities are endless!

Blue jeans. We ask you: When have jeans gone out of style? Never. That said, investing in a pair of good denims should not give you buyer’s remorse. When shopping for a pair, make sure you try walking in them and—best of all—sitting in them, so you can see if the waist is too maluwag when you sit down (and end up showing a more-than-visible panty line to the public). Find one that fits snugly on your hips, then have alterations done (length, waistline) to get the perfect fit.

Not a jeans type of girl? Look for pants in neutral shades like black, gray, or brown.

Tip: If you’ve found a pair you like, buy two or get another one in a slightly different shade. The life of your jeans will definitely outlast the price you paid for them.

Pumps. Though black is the best shade for this shoe style, you can also opt for dark brown or white. The classiness of this style can go from corporate to chic in a jiffy—it all depends on the outfit.

To try:

Metallic bling. We don’t mean to go ghetto like gangsta rap singer-celebs; we’re thinking more along the lines of sequins and bright-colored bling. Choose from carefully “clustered embellishments” as Vogue puts it or go for chunky pieces like belts, bracelets or earrings. Just make sure you only wear one or you’ll be a painful sight for sore eyes!

Ballerina details. Ballet flats, bows, ruffles—feminine is still in. Lace leggings will still work but only if you throw in a top that contrasts with it, like a rocker chick loose top or sneakers with an attitude. Don’t pile everything on all at once—remember, balance is key in fashion.

Jumpsuits. This one-piece wonder gives off an impression of dowdiness but don’t be fooled—with crafty layering and embellishing, you can make this work for you. Toss a hoodie over it to go sporty or wear it with a belt and key accessories (like a necklace or big earrings) for a casual, lounging-about-the-house look.
