Handle with Care
Caring for your clothes means more than just taking your precious threads to a dry cleaner or laundry shop and having them professionally cleaned. How you store and keep your clothes, shoes, and bags is a huge factor in ensuring your fashion pieces’ longevity. Here are a few tips and tricks we’ve picked up from fashionistas.
To keep zippers smooth and “lubricated”, rub them occasionally with candle wax. Simply use the stub of a candle to achieve this task.
Check the humidity of your room. If it’s too humid, buy de-humidifiers (available at supermarkets and department stores) and place them in strategic areas in your room, particularly in your closet and other areas where you store your bags and shoes. The humidity can cause your closet (and subsequently your clothes) to have that old, moldy odor and can make your bags and shoes to mildew. In addition, if you want to prevent moisture and mildew build-up, stuff your shoes and bags with crumpled newspaper. Remember to leave your bags and shoes open in order to air out the moisture.
It’s always better to fold your clothes and store them in drawers instead of hanging them in your closet. Over time, because of the pull of gravity, the straps of your tops and dresses become longer. The same goes for your jeans and bottoms.
Use baking soda to keep foot odor away. Lightly sprinkle them on your shoes and store them in an airy, open area, and away from direct sunlight. Storing your shoes in an enclosed space will only worsen the smell.
If you want to avoid having your clothes smell of mothballs, use linen spray instead. There’s now a variety of scents to choose from—from lavender to tea tree to grape and more.
In case of a lint emergency, simply use Scotch tape to get rid of them. Just pat them over the “linty” area; don’t rub or pull too hard, as the jerking motion may wrinkle or worse, tear the fabric.
Treat spots and stains as soon as possible. The longer you leave them untreated or uncleaned, the higher the chances of them leaving a mark on you, literally.
