As much as we hate to admit it, the economic crisis is really hitting us hard, such that even having coffee with friends can be a bit painful on your wallet. But having fun and kicking back from the stress of daily life are vital to one’s sanity. How to do these without having to shell out your precious pesos? Check out our suggestions below.
Indulge in a long hot bath. During the work week, we bet that you just jump into the shower and rush through a 10-minute bath—correct? Reward yourself with “the simple pleasures of a long, relaxing bath,” suggest Tom Hodgkinson and Dan Kieran, editors of The Book of Idle Pleasures. “Follow the medieval tradition and fill your bath with spices and rose petals.” You can even read a chapter from a novel you’re currently devouring to amp the R&R factor. Don’t have a tub? Take a long, hot shower using a lavender-scented bath gel—lavender is widely known for its soothing effect.
Listen to your favorite music. Plug in a CD filled with your fave tunes while driving, or put on your headphones while commuting or at work. Studies have shown that music helps lower stress levels, so if you’re feeling especially zapped, let the melody take over your senses and “sing” the stress and fatigue away.
Tip: Belt out your fave karaoke song while in the shower. It’ll boost your soul and hey, everybody sounds good while singing in the shower anyway!
Get lazy. Everyday, our lives revolve a long list of to-dos: bills to pay, tasks to tackle, events to attend, people to talk to. Give yourself a break, girl! Allot one day during the weekend when you’ll just stay in bed in your comfy pajamas and watch TV or read or simply do meditation. Declare that day as your “day off”. Most importantly, don’t let the guilt of not doing anything productive do the talking—you’ve worked hard and partied hard, so you deserve to laze and lounge around hard.
Hang out with friends…but not in an over-populated coffeeshop or bar. Spend a few quiet and peaceful hours in your place or your friend’s. Not only is it much cheaper that way (a cup of java or a bottle of wine won’t cost as much), but you’ll also be able to hear each other without shouting.
People watch. If you’re fine with spending time with friends over coffee, suggest that you people watch and make up unique stories about them. You’ll not only find yourself laughing hard at some of the absurd kwentos you’ll come up with, but your imagination will also be stimulated while doing creative story-weaving. Trust us, this is one of the best ways to get your creative juices flowing.
