Office Mantras

For most of us working bellas, having a nine-to-five routine can be, well, boring. Or worse, it can be upsetting or frustrating, like a vicious cycle that never ends. Well, here’s some good news for you: you can change how you feel by simply channeling positive vibes or focusing on the better aspects of your job. Really, it’s all in the mind, and we’ve got a few thoughts or mantras you should always remember. Jot these down so you won’t forget.

“I will not let this ruin my day/week.” If you happen to have an unpleasant encounter with an impossible client, supplier, or colleague, don’t dwell on it. Give yourself a few minutes to rant (internally or to a trusted co-worker), decompress, then continue doing your job. Don’t give that unpleasant someone the satisfaction of ruining your workday or workweek—he or she isn’t worth it.

“One mistake doesn’t mean I’m a loser.” Girl, don’t be so hard on yourself. We all make mistakes—even the highest paid employee or CEO can commit errors while working. Apologize about your boo-boo and do your best to troubleshoot. Your boss and co-workers will appreciate your initiative and your devotion to your work. And remember: one mistake does not equal the end of your career.

“I am grateful for my job.” With the global recession still rearing its ugly head, count your blessings. Be thankful that you are still part of the working force and earning a salary that allows you to have a few gimiks here and there, a little shopping spree, and pay the bills at home. Sure, there may be some nasty elements at work (such as that annoyingly tsismosa colleague), but look at it from a macro perspective: you can afford to have a life at the end of the day.

“At the end of the workday or workweek, I look forward to…” Cheer up! There’s light at the end of the tunnel. So you’ve put in more than 24 hours in the office straight. Still, after that hellish project, you can look forward to catching up on your sleep. Here’s another example: you get to kick back after a hectic workday and indulge in your favorite TV series or have post-dinner drinks with friends. See, it’s not all that bad.

“I can do this! I’m a go-getter bella!” Were you assigned a project or task that scares you to death, for fear of not being good enough? Look at it this way: Your boss gave you this huge responsibility because he or she sees and knows your potential. Don’t let fear take over; instead, tell yourself (over and over) that you’re a good, hardworking employee, and you’ll do your best to ace this “test.” To let fear reign makes you a quitter—and you are no quitter.
