What’s Your Calling, Girl?

For some, they know what they want in life: To be a doctor, practice law, work in advertising, or climb up the company ladder in a bank or a multinational corporation. But for most of us, we take a lot of detours before we figure out what we really want to do.

Don’t fret, though. Every person is unique, and that means what we want doesn’t necessarily have to be the same as everyone else’s. What’s considered an achievement or milestone for you may not be such for another. Still, if you’re feeling lost, let your sisters at Belle de Jour help you reach your career destination with these directional hints:

Take baby steps. You don’t have to dive headfirst into every money-making opportunity (a.k.a. job offer) you encounter. You have every right to be choosy, because the right job or career will make or break your happiness. Regardless of what other people might say, trust your instincts and go for what will make you happy. Don’t know what job’s perfect for you? Read on…

Make a list. Whip out a notepad and start writing down all the elements of what YOU think is a happy office or a fulfilling career. It could be “working with teamplayers,” “having a nice view of the city,” or even as simple as “only 15 minutes away from where I live.” Don’t be shy; go ahead and list it all down. Also throw in what your personal attributes and your beliefs are. That inventory of characteristics will help you decide which career path to take.

It’s okay to make “mistakes.” So you’re not happy with the job you decided to go for. Keep this in mind: It’s not the end of the world, and you still have the rest of your life to correct it. Once you’ve made up your mind, map out your plan B—what you’ll be doing next, how much time you can afford looking for another job, your finances, etc. Remember to keep your plan flexible and be patient.

Lastly, don’t dwell on the past. Your life shouldn’t have any room for regrets! Think of this experience from this perspective—what happened to you has helped you get to where you are now and will shed an even brighter light on where you’re headed. So, chin up and rock on, sister!

Tip: We can’t stress this enough: It pays to be organized. No matter what you do, tackle things with a to-do list. Even the least OC and anal person needs a to-do list to help her remember what needs to be done and help her stay on track.
